How loud is too loud?

Sound is measured in units called decibels (dB). A conversation between two people in a quiet room registers at 60 dB. A quiet room is 30 dB. Sound that is louder than 85 dB is considered too loud and can actually cause damage to the ears. Everyday noises, including the sound of a blow dryer, helicopter and chainsaw all measure at 100 dB and fireworks can blast off at 120 dB.

Sounds occurring at 85 dB, such as loud traffic or a noisy restaurant, can be heard for eight hours a day without damage. Any noise louder than that, such as a concert or rifle blast, which measure from 120-180 dB, can cause permanent damage in a shorter period of time.
